Photos from the 2008 Greater Washington Bike MS Tour, a 2-day cycling event to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis. This was my fourth year riding in this great event, and the first year in which I was not the only unicyclist. That was thanks to my son Miles, who stepped up in a big way, raising over $1,200 in donations, and setting a new personal best for distance with a 63 mile ride on Day 1. Between us, we brought in roughly $7,000 in donations to the MS Society.

hayope > Day 1, fresh out of the gate. Air was still quite chilly so we were bundled up in windbreakers. At this point, we were still ahead of most of the bikers, since we were in the lead starting group. Over the course of the day we were passed and passed.
hayope > Early morning shadow play from the big wheels.
hayope > Miles riding across the Rainbow Bridge in La Conner, Washington. This bridge sees you off, and welcomes you back 50 miles later.
hayope > Day 1: Somewhere about Mile 20, with the Padilla Bay mudflats to our left. In the distance, the route takes a left onto a pedestrian bridge that goes all the way across the bay (visible starting just to the left of the stand of trees, and going left all the way off the edge of the photo.
hayope > Miles had done plenty of 20-mile rides, but this was his first major (defined by me as 50-mile plus) distance ride. On major rides, it's important to pay close attention to hydration and nutrition. Here Miles enjoys an energy drink while contemplating his supply of gooey energy gels.
hayope > Day 1, Mile 35. Miles with the Deception Pass Bridge in the background. This is a high traffic bridge, and to get across it the riders go across in groups, backed by a Harley Rider with flashers on, serving as a barrier to the cars.
hayope > Day 1: Miles simultaneously crossing Rainbow Bridge and the 50 Mile mark. Only 11 more to go!
hayope > Day 2 at the Lighthouse Espresso Stand. RTL racer Joe Myers, his fantastic wife Lana, and Sophie the Cav. King Charles Spaniel. In an act of typical (for them) support and generosity, the devoted part of their Sunday to actually finding me out on the course so they could say hello and buy me an espresso. Good friends, good espresso, and--as you can see from the flag in the distance--a good tailwind for the final stretch. It doesn't get any better...
