hayope  > Unicycling Photos > Jeff RTL Qualifying Ride - Day 1
Fire, Famine, Floods! After having to bail from Ride The Lobster, Jeff is planning to take my place. To compete in the event, you have to do a two-day qualifying ride that meets a defined set of criteria for mileage and climbing. Since he's bailing me out, I agreed to ride with him for Day 1 of his qualifying ride. It was a HOT ride (Fire), with temperatues in the 90s. I kept running out of water (Famine), which ultimately helped cause a late-ride bonk. And we ran into real Floods...giving us both a "first" for having the pavement under our wheels turn into river before our eyes. A day in the saddle that will be very tough to beat. Distance 65km, climbing just shy of 1,000 meters.

hayope > Jeff RTL Qualifying Ride - Day 1 photo
hayope > Blackwood Farms in Redmond, WA. I've always wanted to own a horse property, but didn't realize until today that I actually did. After snapping a quick photo, one of the employees came over to talk to us, accompanied by a fine horse. At first, she was pissed at Jeff for using their fence as a leg-stretching bar. But as soon as I informed her I was New Management, she shifted the cold shoulder to me. After my coffee and IBU in the morning, I'm going to have to get back up there and sort things out.
hayope > Which way do we go? Had to ask a couple bikers here, as this was the first time either of us had been to this particular intersection on unicycle. Left, it turned out, was the correct answer. It was Jeff's ride, so he got to be the Photo Subject.
hayope > Jeff, riding by the Historic Cow statue in front of the historic Carnation Farm. This was research and breeding facility that helped support much of the evaporated and condensed milk production in America during the middle part of the last century. Note that the Historic Cow really needs to be milked.
hayope > Jeff in front of the main complex of the historic Carnation Farm.
hayope > Jeff crossing the Snoqualmie River. Note how high the river is, due to two days of very high temperatures applied to record snowfall about 45 miles upstream from here. The height of the river would become a factor about 10 miles further along in our ride.
hayope > The start of trouble. At 30 miles into our ride, we found the road closed because they were busy building the on and off ramps to a brand new bridge (visible above the left-most barrier, and destroying the old road that leads to the VERY old bridge (much smaller, and visible directly above the No Bicycles sign). We were hoping to be the first unicyclists to ride across the new bridge, but there were workers painting it, and they sharply turned us back. But the road to the old bridge was flooded out by the very high river, so we had to bypass it by hanging over the side of the new bridge, dropping to a dry spot below, then handing down our unicycles. This became the Point of No Return, as there was no way to climb back up the route we had just taken.
hayope > Jeff on the seriously deteriorated Old Bridge. As soon as the New Bridge is open, they'll be taking this one down. There's a fair chance that we will have made the Last Unicycle Crossing of the Old Bridge.
hayope > Jeff just blazing down Tolt Hill on his geared 29". He is so much faster than me on the downhills that the Puget Sounders have upgraded their third rider.
