hayope  > Unicycling Photos > 100 Miles of Nowhere
I've wanted to do a Century Ride on my unicycle for some time, but was having trouble with the logistics, and finding a good route. You pretty much have to be self-sustained, which can mean carrying a very heavy pack full of food and water and tools, so you're prepared if anything goes wrong. Then I heard about the 100 Miles of Nowhere from fatcyclist.com http://www.fatcyclist.com/2009/04/23/register-now-for-the-100-miles-of-nowhere/). It's basically a performance art concept: the idea is to make a meaningful donation to the Lance Armstrong Foundation http://www.livestrong.org/site/c.khLXK1PxHmF/b.2660611/k.BCED/Home.htm), then ride 100 miles while covering as little physical distance as possible. Many racers do it on their bike rollers. Others on a high school track or around the central loop road in a city park. I chose Klahanie, my suburban cookie-cutter neighborhood, as the perfect location. I could do a five-mile-loop 20 times, while never traveling further than 2 miles from my house. No need to pack a lot of food or water, since I'd be passing my house every 25 minutes. No need to pack tools, since help would be a 5 minute drive away. The only downside: tedium.

hayope > Good old Klahanie Boulevard, which I now know all too well. This was one of the nicer flat straightaways. One of the tougher parts of the ride was passing the Starbucks at the end of this road, which was the turnaround point for my laps. I often stop at this Starbucks on my regular joy rides, but I figured if I stopped there today, I'd have officially ridden "somewhere", and hence been disqualified.
hayope > I started the day with a sub-goal of trying for a 100:10:1, which is 100 miles ridden in 10 hours, in one day. That's total elapsed time, not just riding time, so bio breaks and food stops count against you. Here at 30 mile mark...still optimistic to maintain that pace.
hayope > 40 mile mark...losing some ground against the clock due to bio break.
