Desert backpacking with high school friends Peter and Mark--Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Note: these photos are NOT in chronological order. The swimming hole in the sun photos were from one nice day we squeezed in between several days of storms, floods, quicksand. Utah can be that way.

hayope > This tree's entire life has been defined by Lighting.

hayope > Tent plus petroglyphs under the "Big Overhang" in Escalante Canyon. The rocks in the sand to the left of the tent spell out "Don't Touch", as a plea to the many idiots that seem to wander through here and can't keep their hands off the ancient rock art.

hayope > Erosion leaving boulder on pedastel of sand columns. Freaky.

hayope > What happens when Lighting decides it wants to get in on the "creating arches" game.

hayope > Me, standing at the confluence where a clear running side creek meets the muddy Escalante River.

hayope > Peter, serving to further mix the clear and muddy with his legs.

hayope > Calf Creek Canyon, taken from the slickrock above Upper Calf Creek Falls. You can see the top of the drop-off of Lower Calf Creek Falls just left of the center of the photo, where the stripe of green ends.

hayope > Calf Creek Canyon.

hayope > Some side road off the Burr Trail. Can't remember where we were trying to get to or the name of that ridge up ahead. We were hoping the road ahead was not washed out and we could get further into the backcountry. Hope did not equal reality.
