Father's Day Unicycling : Photo log from the annual Father's Day unicycle ride I do with my son Miles. It's a great tradition, and one that gives me time to be closer to my son, while also using the quiet time to think about my own Dad. Photos in here from 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009.

Ride 'N Feed 2009 : The sixth annual Issaquah Ride 'N Feed, wherein unicycling riff-raff of all sorts invade a sleepy suburban neighborhood to do some light woods riding and heavy eating. This year had the added bonus of being on Father's Day, with a full-on thunder, lighting, and hailstorm to soak us all to the bone mid-ride. Good times...

Miles 15th Birthday - Riding the Age : To celebrate my son Miles's 15th birthday, a few Seattle Area Riders came together to help him "ride his age" with a fun urban uni ride. Harper and Travis joined me and Miles for an 18 mile ride (overachiever) from Gasworks Park to Pike Place Market via Fremont and Ballard. We had so much fun we lost track of time and finished after dark.

MS Bike Tour 2008 : Photos from the 2008 Greater Washington Bike MS Tour, a 2-day cycling event to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis. This was my fourth year riding in this great event, and the first year in which I was not the only unicyclist. That was thanks to my son Miles, who stepped up in a big way, raising over $1,200 in donations, and setting a new personal best for distance with a 61 mile ride on Day 1. Between us, we brought in roughly $7,000 in donations to the MS Society.

International Harper Day 2008 : The 5th Annual International Harper Day festivities were held on the Iron Horse Trail in Washington. A cool, crisp, wet day in the Cascades that felt more like late September than August. We set out in the rain, and rode on and off with it all day long. For the first time, the group decided to skip the traditional group photo in front of the tunnel. This may be the first year we've ridden the IHT when it was both warmer and drier inside the tunnel. We had a great turnout, 17 riders total. For a couple of the grown-ups, it was their first time on the ride. For two of our second-generation unicyclists, it was their first year switching from bicycle to 36" unicycle. We had Bruce to bring in the International component, and visiting uni dignitaries from both Oregon and Texas. For a ride write-up from the guest of honor himself, go here: http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1089704&postcount=25.

JC's Birthday Ride : July 14, 2008. Me, Harper, JC do a little urban ride in celebration of JC's 4xth birthday. It was a great day of exploration with fantastic riding weather. Our first espresso stop was less than a kilometer into the pedaling, which pretty much set the tone for the day. Espresso to start, Drawbridge Blond to finish, and plenty of coffee, gelato, and blackened salmon sandwich in between. Oh yeah, and we rode a few miles too...

Jeff RTL Qualifying Ride - Day 1 : Fire, Famine, Floods! After having to bail from Ride The Lobster, Jeff is planning to take my place. To compete in the event, you have to do a two-day qualifying ride that meets a defined set of criteria for mileage and climbing. Since he's bailing me out, I agreed to ride with him for Day 1 of his qualifying ride. It was a HOT ride (Fire), with temperatues in the 90s. I kept running out of water (Famine), which ultimately helped cause a late-ride bonk. And we ran into real Floods...giving us both a "first" for having the pavement under our wheels turn into river before our eyes. A day in the saddle that will be very tough to beat. Distance 65km, climbing just shy of 1,000 meters.

Ride 'N Feed 2007 : The Issaquah Ride 'N Feed is an annual party we host for the Seattle Area Riders and other distinguished guests...basically anyone we know on one wheel, and anyone they know and care to drag along. Format is pretty simple: show up late morning, coffee and feed, dork around on unicycles in the street, then hit the trail for some woods riding. Come back to more street riding, hot tub, pulled pork and salmon, and key lime pie. If you can walk after that, maybe another lap around the lake. This year, the Ride 'N Feed was also a send-off party for our dear friend Irene, who schooled us on unicycle for the last four years, and was about to move back to Minnesota.

Unicycling in Amsterdam - Sept. 2007 : A perfect, golden September Saturday in Amsterdam, and perfect conditions for some uni-touristing of the city. I had the good fortune to be welcomed by three locals: Klaas, Sybren, and Leo. It was a great progression...Klaas and I started out in the morning, striking out from Central Station into the western part of the city, and ultimately a nice tree-lined loop in Vondelpark. Following a short espresso break, we headed back into Central Station to meet Sybren. Sybren took us on a ferry over to the part of the city he lives, and we added some more miles before catching the ferry back and saying goodbye to Klaas. From there, Sybren and I decided ale was more important than riding, so we stopped for some beer and live music at the recently-built concert hall. From there, Sybren had to go, so I did some solo riding and walking, enjoying the setting sun across several of the city's canals, and drinking an Amstel or two within visual range of the Amstel River. . As evening came on, it was back to Central Station to meet Leo, and we logged some night-riding miles out to a great Turkish restaurant he recommended. Mmmm...lamb shank and cous-cous. I was dead tired by the end of it all, but had one of my best days of urban riding ever, thanks to my new-found Dutch friends.

Espresso Training in Farm Country : JC and TB ride JC's age out through farm country of Western Washington. Lots of corn, cows, roadkill, and of course, e s p r e s s o. The occassion? We needed a "proper 40" so that JC could ride his age. Of course we stuck with JC's rule of thumb: one espresso every 10 miles, whether you need it or not.
